Perdiguero de Burgos

Burgos Pointers

The Perdiguero de Burgos, also known as the Burgos Pointer, is a Spanish breed of dog that is quite rare in the United States. This breed, originating from Castile, particularly in the province of Burgos, is a natural pointer and retriever, and is primarily used for hunting. The breed has a long history, dating back to the 16th century, and is believed to be one of the foundation breeds for the German Shorthaired Pointer.

This pointer is a gentle and calm dog breed that makes an excellent companion in the home. They are intelligent and quick learners when it comes hunting. This breed is known for their outstanding temperament, being obedient, and easy to train. They are patient with children and can tolerate rough play.

The figure of the Burgos Pointer is that of a robust build dog with intense focus and noble appearance. Things to note are their long ears and two folded sheets in the form of a double chin. The tail is either docked or left full length.

Color: There are two color variations of this breed. The first one features a stained or combined color with other shades of brown, while the second one has a brown base color with white spots. A distinctive feature of this dog is a white spot on the top of its head.

Coat: The fur is short, bushy and smooth. A very low maintenance coat.

Height: Males from 24 to 26 inches and females from 23 to 25 inches

Weight: Males weigh 70 to 85 pounds and females weigh 55 to 66 pounds - however many Burgos exceed the standard weight

The Burgos Pointer breed requires regular exercise to maintain their physical and mental health. They are suited for active families who can provide ample space for them to explore. Apartment living is not recommended for this breed, as they require a large yard to burn off their excess energy. An under-exercised Burgos Pointer can become difficult to handle.

Hunting Ability

The Burgos Pointer is a versatile hunting dog that excels in pointing and retrieving hare and all upland game birds and fowl. This breed is a methodical hunter and rarely, if ever, outruns it's nose. With its impressive physical endurance, it can navigate any terrain with ease while also being an excellent swimmer. Originally bred for deer hunting, this breed has evolved over time to become a faster and more agile gundog. Despite it being smaller than the orignal Spanish Pointer, the Burgos Pointer remains a diligent and passionate hunter with exceptional scenting abilities that are second to none.
